On January 25 we have a monumental shift of energy as Pluto, the planet of power, cleansing and transformation enters the sign of Capricorn. Pluto purifies by destruction and rebirth. It represents the collective primitive shadow and our own private shadows. It conveys a sense of fanaticism, obsession and overkill at its worst. At its best, it brings concentration, profound perception, and reform. I usually compare Pluto to a volcano or freight train. It unleashes great powers that teach us surrender.
Capricorn is the sign of leadership, discipline and maturity. It has a focus on accomplishment and visible results. It has high pragmatic standards for performance. It defines direction, endures difficulty, corrects errors and stays the course until goals are achieved. All of us will take responsibility for something in the larger world beyond our personal lives. It is a long process, staying in this sign into 2024. If you are just seeking prestige in an exploitative system, it will knock you down and wring you inside out. If you serve your highest spiritual purpose and do what must be done it will reward you with self-respect, achievement and the respect of others.
Capricorn can gift you with back-bone, practicality, and competence. We will all face what the authorities in our lives taught us about our self-worth and power. We will have choices. Will we dominate from self-importance (Capricorn can be snobby) or assist from truth? Will appearances and goals be more important than the feelings of the people we work with? Will we whip ourselves into action (Capricorn is the guilt sign) or will devotion naturally guide us to be disciplined? Capricorns like to be ultra prepared with a game plan and the highest quality tools. When we use the archetype unskillfully we become anxious and pessimistic about damage control.
In worldly matters, Capricorn represents societal organizations and institutions- governing bodies and their leaders. Government, executives, corporations, financial structures, churches, infrastructure, anything that leads and regulates large collective efforts. They will operate in extreme ways. Keep in mind that The Shadow destroys itself through excess. The American Revolution happened the last time Pluto was in Capricorn. The issue was “no taxation without representation.” The structure of representation has become co-opted by greed. The world is ripe for a populist reform, or some kind of post-democracy system, maybe something more community-based. Between January of 2002 and March of 2005, Chiron moved through Capricorn and brought many wounds of our institutions to our attention through scandals. Perhaps this recent wake-up call will propel the healing and lessen the intensity of the backlash as our structures and leadership styles change.
There were a lot of other slow moving planets
in the sign of Capricorn during The Eighties. The movie “Wall Street”
is a good example of the misuse of Capricorn power. Mike Douglas’s
greedy corporate raider character, Gordon Gekko, has a motto: “Greed,
for want of a better word, is good.” It is a moral tale and Gekko
is a true Mephistopheles. Charlie Sheen’s character Bud Fox is tempted,
but ultimately chooses integrity.
“The wise leader is not collecting a string of successes. The leader is helping others to find their own success. …The wise leader knows that the reward for doing the work arises naturally out of the work.”
-John Heider The Tao of Leadership
Mercury Retrograde in Aquarius
On January 28 Mercury, the planet of communication goes (apparently) backwards in the sign of Aquarius until February 19. This is a time when messages, plans, and appointments can go awry. In Aquarius, electronics are particularly vulnerable to problems so back up your computer. Communications satellites could be affected. It is ill-advised to buy cars or anything electronic. Write yourself post-it notes on the bathroom mirror in case your fancy iPhone screws you around. Schedule travel with plenty of time for connections if there are delays. If you can’t postpone signing contracts, triple check the mutual understandings and details. These 3 weeks are favorable for introspection and for integration of information you gathered previously. You may re-connect with old friends or communities.
On February 5, back-pedaling Mercury meets up
with the Sun. Classically this is a day for a revelatory idea or piece
of information. If you can remember what was happening in early February
of 2000, this year stimulates the same point in the zodiac when there
was an Eclipse meeting Uranus, a time of fated revolution, instability,
or inspiration. Something should reference the first 6 months of 2000
for you. Eclipses can conceal things. New information may come forward
between February 5 and March 10. Look back at old calendars or journals
to jog your memory.
