Don’t You Know What the Night
The greatest powers in the world are the life force, which flows through us and makes babies, and the mystery of death, over which we are totally powerless. Therefore Scorpio has a lot to do with sex. This month Venus and Mars join each other in the sign of Scorpio on December 6. This conjunction represents the birth of new desires for social relations, sexuality, and mutual creations. Venus and Mars come to the same place in the Zodiac every 18 to 24 months, so that is not a major deal. However, they have not met exactly in Scorpio since 1972! The next Venus Mars union will be in Scorpio again(!!) in October of 2006. This phenomenon does represent a shift in the collective consciousness. Think of the ways that relations between the masculine and the feminine changed with Women’s Liberation in 1972. The mistrust, frustration, and confusion about sexual politics we have remaining can go through a rebalancing in the next 4 years.
Why do people get so bent out of shape about sex? It is because when they surrender in utter vulnerability they often give their power to the other person. Ideally, you would surrender your power to the holiness of the moment and the glory of deep human experience. There is a kind of relief in being naturally primitive. Snapping back into protection of this vulnerability and the terror of trusting another human being leads us into manipulation or sometimes running away. When we are mesmerized by the other person it is Mother Nature’s beautiful and pleasurable strategy for continuing the gene pool and it is very effective. But ultimately our partners fail to deliver the utter acceptance and intense attention that we crave. Then the coercion starts. Add the way money tangles around sex and various cultural distortions, and we can end up in quite a swamp.
Our souls learn a lot from giving away our power until the pain forces us to generate our own power, heal ourselves, and direct our power toward sharing our gifts with the world. Often we use love (or deprivation and avoidance of love) dramas as a decoy to keep us occupied so we can avoid stepping into our world purpose. We don’t have to walk through life alone. Scorpio teaches us that mutual sharing and support from each person’s inner strengths can forge a cooperation that accomplishes much more as two than the separate efforts of one plus one.
Having intimate reflectors of your love can remind you of the beauty of the heart and of the nurturing that is always available if we reach inside for peace. When you surrender to God’s love and treasure yourself you can be discerning about your attractions and choices. Loving anyone in any role can seem risky. It is the stuff of Greek tragedies and Shakespearian masterpieces. Wrestling with our deep shadow gives life a depth, richness, and intensity. Ultimately we become more grateful to have the privilege of being alive.
We have had an intense year of learning about relationships with the Venus retrograding in June, and Jupiter the planet of exploration entering Libra the sign of cooperation in September. Now we move from “ I like you, you’re attractive, and lets collaborate” to “Can I bare my soul to you, go beyond survival mode and share what I value most deeply.” We have a challenge to find out how our greatest ideals for humanity and the planet can be achieved when we are still creatures who can malign and seethe about our very nearest and dearest behind closed doors. Forgiveness and acceptance are hard for Scorpio, but those are the most important traits to develop in the next four years.
In the process of soul growth, the advancement for Scorpio is the next sign, Sagittarius. It represents absolute honesty and openness to a variety of points of view. Confessing our secret vendettas, voicing our assumptions, and taking responsibility for clear communication takes the charge out of the compulsive shadows that haunt Scorpios who operate out of fear. Then we are available to be present for the sweet intriguing mysteries and healing that the passionate life offers.
